The Isle of Wight Youth Trust is open to applications for placement from student/trainee counsellors.

For nearly 40 years, the Isle of Wight Youth Trust has been a trusted and outstanding, independent local charity delivering short -term (6-12 sessions) confidential, professional counselling, therapeutic and wellbeing services to children and young people aged 5-25 years. Our work also includes mental health education and training to professionals, parents and young people, as well as advocacy work in seeking the voice of children and young people to influence improvements to mental health services on the Island.

We are seeking applications from student counsellors, who have completed, or are completing their Level 5 in Counselling to deliver high quality therapy sessions to children and young people between the ages of 5 – 16 years, as based on their qualification. Supported by skilled clinical supervision and outstanding leadership, you will:

  • Deliver face to face counselling sessions to children and young people living on the Isle of Wight,
  • Carry out counselling assessments to individual children and young people and support signposting and referral to the most appropriate service
  • Demonstrate outcomes and evaluation of success and achievements through therapy
  • Work holistically with parents/families if appropriate Placements are usually for 1 year, but may be flexible.

Placements will start in Spring 2025, but there may be scope for flexibility here too. Due to the popularity of our student placements, we are likely to have to conduct a shortlisting and interview process.

Student registration with an appropriate body e.g BACP, BAAT is preferred.

The role involves regulated activity with children and young people and is therefore subject to an enhanced plus barring DBS check. Anyone on the Barred List for working with children and young people is legally barred from the role. The successful candidates will undertake an enhanced DBS check and any offer of employment made is conditional subject to full company Safer Recruitment checks.
